GOP LG Candidate: Fairfax Casino Location "Makes No Sense"
"It's time elected officials listen to the people they represent and not their own agenda."
Yesterday, I reported on 2025 Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor Alex Bastani’s (D-Falls Church) position on the Fairfax casino legislation before the General Assembly.
This morning, 2025 GOP candidate for lieutenant governor John Curran (R-James City County), veteran and small business owner, sent me his statement on the proposed casino legislation.
Curran’s statement:
Thank you for your question.
As for the Tysons Corner casino, my stand is simple. No!
I grew up in Fairfax County, had multiple businesses there and know many, business owners and CEOs in the Tysons Corner area, as well as residents and NOBODY supports it.
As someone who has done economic development around the world as well as construction. This location makes no sense. The negative impacts are so many you can't start to list them.
I was at an event last night where my opponent Pat Harrity, said he was against it, yet stated a caveat. He said "Especially, if it doesn't include a conference center". We'll the plans I have seen show a casino, hotel, restaurants, and entertainment / conference facility. Connect that to the Washington Post report that Comstock gave him a $50,000 donation. I question the no answer.
My opinion, if you could pick the worst place to put this, Tysons Corner is it. It's time elected officials listen to the people they represent and not their own agenda.
John Curran
Like Bastani, Curran is not equivocal about his opposition to this proposed casino.
In the 2022 Republican U.S. Senate primary, Fairfax County voters cast 21,517 votes. That’s about 7% of the total statewide primary electorate in that race (307,757). In the 2024 Republican U.S. Senate primary, Fairfax County voters cast 23,279 votes, about 9% of the total statewide primary electorate (273,307).
There is reason to believe, however, that local Republican opposition to this project is more solidified than opposition from Democrats.
Stay tuned for responses from other candidates.
